We as consumers are constantly overwhelmed with advertisements telling us what to buy, when to buy, how to buy, where to buy and how much to pay. In this process we may hear that buying fair trade products is a good thing to do….but what exactly is Fair Trade and who does it help?

Fair trade is an alternative way of doing business that promotes equal wages to communities, engaging in sustainable practices and promoting healthy working conditions.

Fair trade is a market based approach to alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability. It aims at educating and empowering disadvantaged producers and connects them to a market, so they too can participate in global trade. It encompasses such principles as:

Anti-slave, anti-child labor

  • Environmentally friendly processes
  • A respectful relationship with producers
  • A fair wage
  • A healthy working environment
  • Gender equality
  • The development of infrastructure
  • The development/training of the artisans

Fair trade is a growing business in the United States. Conscious buyers are demanding more and more fairly traded products and green goods. More than one million Americans buy Fair Trade products annually. Fair Trade may be the most powerful tool for boosting standards of living in the developing world. David Salcedo, founder of PEOPLink states “(Fair Trade is) a very attractive concept, across the political spectrum. People like the idea of helping people, not with handouts but with an opportunity to work hard and decently.”

Arrow Earth is committed to offering products from Fair Trade companies such as Handmade Expressions, with the knowledge that fair trade practices are respected and followed. It is with trust that Arrow offers these products to the consumer so that you can buy with confidence and peace of mind. .
